MARBLE MANTEL RESTORATION

Owners of a Brooklyn brownstone, Rene and Janelle made it a priority to restore and redesign their home. We were then asked to revive their fireplace and trim in the classical, modern living room. The slate fireplace was encumbered by years of wear and tear; the decrepit paint chipping and cracking. Rene and Janelle’s inclination towards Carrera marble led us to study our own library of reference photos and sample marble pieces. We created a custom-mixed paint with a cooler tone, and began to strip the paint off.

The surface was prepped, smoothing over chips and scratches. We typically marble using custom mixed acrylic glazes on a palette; this gives the painter a variation of color and tone. As we prepared to apply the brush to the surface, a visualization of the creation of real marble guided us. Applying layer after layer, we painted the marble from the inside out, giving us full control of the marble and its veining diversity. A final touch of varnish brought a low luster, softly and elegantly reflecting the light.

In the center of the fireplace sits a decorative metal insert that bears the same weathered paint as its surrounding slate. Rather than replacing it, we opted to refresh it in a way that complements the mantle. Layers of metallic paint were stippled, resulting in the appearance of hammered metal. We applied multiple layers of matte black glaze, accentuating the luster of the marble.
The distinctive trim in the living room’s doors and windows had years of history captured in its layers of paint, varnish and stain. Our goal was to bring back life to its decorative carving elements, marrying the preservation of its high quality craftsmanship with a fresh modern look.

We began with a space that was nearly condemned, and ended with a home that bridged the gap between the past and the present. Light plays off of everything in this space that has become a backdrop to their life. Nothing bold, no strong statement in the paint; rather, a subtle background that invites family and friends to take comfort amongst their art and furniture.
