The penthouse of this luxurious, Neo-Renaissance style building in Upper West Side Manhattan is decorated in antique wallpaper and elaborate detail. The penthouse was being remodeled by the Silver Lining construction crew, who specializes in high-end renovation. We had previously collaborated with them on several other projects around the city. They invited us back to match the penthouse elevator door with the foyer, which displays one-of-a-kind pewter craftsmanship in its baseboards, crown, and door leading into the gallery.

As we began to take in the color and character of the pewter, the Silver Lining crew prepped and primed our work area, creating a blank slate for our decorative painting. On went a new base coat, followed by glazes of shimmery metallic paints that build layers of reflective metals in a variety of tones. A subtle strié technique was applied to create that distinct brushed metal effect. Subtle shifts of cooler and warmer tones on the palate created visual depth, resulting in a soft, cloudy impression. To add shadows in the decorative profile of the door and trim, we used an artist brush to apply a darker value of metallic glaze. Stippling and softening it with a badger brush, we then highlighted outside corners, creating depth and a subtle patina. The last steps were to spray the entire surface with two coats of a glossy varnish, and then a custom-mixed metallic wax was hand-rubbed onto the surface.

As we surveyed the finished project, we felt appreciation for the Silver Lining construction crew. Their involvement in our project streamlined the entire process. It is always a pleasure to work with these professionals, and we look forward to future collaborations.
